Not sure if you’re aware, but I am Refinery29’s newest plus-size contributor! I was recently photographed & interviewed for an article about their favorite curvy gals! You can read the original here, but I also included it below!

Tell us about your outfit! What are you wearing?
“I”m wearing an H&M floral skirt, an Old Navy leopard-print top, Jeffrey Campbell shoes, and a Patricia Field clutch.”

What’s your go-to styling trick you constantly employ?
“I am not a minimalist, and I really believe more is more. I make sure my accessories are on point, so even my most ‘basic’ outfit stands out. Also, owning a properly fitting bra is so important, and being that a lot of plus-size women are well endowed, I encourage them to go get professionally fit. The right bra will change your entire shape.”

What are your favorite online and brick-and-mortar stores to shop at? Do you have any tips for plus-size girls who want on-trend items without spending a fortune?
“Brick-and-mortar stores (plus-size specific and non) can be hit or miss. Some of my favorite wardrobe pieces have come from Lane Bryant (vegan leather leggings) & Avenue (tribal print pants), but I tend to walk out of there empty-handed more often than not. I also always seem to find something great at Old Navy (they go up to an 18 & XXL in stores).

“My absolute online favorite is ASOS. Their plus-size collection is a perfect example of how other straight-size stores can keep their same design aesthetic as they increase their size range. Plus-size women want to be able to wear the same exact things that straight-size women wear, and ASOS gets that.”

“Finding fashion-forward plus-size clothes is still a challenge, but improvements are being made. You can definitely find trendy items that won’t cost an arm and a leg, but it will be time consuming. I suggest ‘window shopping’ options online to come up with what style and trends you like before wandering through the mall. And don’t limit yourself to plus-size specific stores; plenty of straight-size clothes can fit you, too, especially if they use stretch material. Maybe that dress is more of a tunic on you, but you can make it work.”

Is there a designer (indie or otherwise!) that’s doing plus-size clothing really well right now? Any designers you want to call out that are doing a particular poor job?
“There are a lot of great indie plus-size designers that I’m a fan of. Cult of California, damn you alexis, Ashley Nell Tipton, Youtheary Khmer, and OneOne3 are some of the newest lines to cross my path, and I’m very excited to see how they grow.

“I love H&M, but I’m so disappointed in their plus-size collection. Its regular collection is filled with unique, trendy, fashion-forward items, but the plus-size collection is filled with shapeless, baggy blouses and basics. I’m thrilled it expanded into larger sizes, but I know it can do better than what’s available now.”

What’s your most worn item in your closet?
“There are so many go-to items I own… Either my olive-and-black, contrast-sleeve coat, my perfectly worn-in denim shirt from Target, my nOir Brooklyn Bridge ring, or my black suede Urban Outfitters booties.”

Any cheap scores of late?
“I bought an insane tiger shirt at Walmart for $10! Seen here on my blog.”

What’s one trend you’d never try?
“You always hear that plus-size women shouldn’t wear stripes, bright colors, white, body-con fits, etc., but I think those rules should be completely ignored. I’m going to wear whatever trends and styles I like, and wear them with confidence.”

Sari, I’m not sari.

Growing up, my childhood best friend was Indian, and consequently exposed me to many aspects of her culture, including their clothing. I was always fascinated by the ornate saris, glimmering bangles and brilliant colors that were infused into every technicolor outfit.

Well, (if you didn’t see where this was leading), this is my version of a modern day, minimalist sari. While, that might seem like a contradiction, I was mostly inspired by the sari (reminiscent of the draping waist of my maxi skirt and the covering of my vest) and the choli (my crop top).

The collar necklace & the bag are also influenced by Indian culture; the deep saffron color of the bag (I know that might be a stretch) is a combination of the top band of the Indian national flag as well as evocative of the vibrant hues found in their dress, and the necklace is a minimalist nod to the opulent wedding choker that most Indian brides wear.

I went to the American Rag event at W.I.P. on Tuesday night where I was able to meet their new “It Girl,” Lenay Dunn. With her fresh-faced Midwest looks and sweet, bubbly personality, she was a far cry from the typical “It Girl” that’s plastered all over blogs with scraggly hair, a scowl and last night’s makeup smeared on her face. Lenay offered a charming and unjaded take on her thoughts about American Rag, Macy’s, fashion and music.

“Well, I’m American Rag’s new It Girl! It was cool,” she continued, “Macy’s reached out to me and said ‘We love the way you dress, the way you style yourself, we know you’re into music and fashion and we think you’d be great to represent our brand!’ And I was like wow thanks! Like, of course! It’s a partnership made in heaven, I love it!”

Not only will Lenay wear American Rag on her MTV show, 10 on Top, she will also be clad in American Rag as she reports from various shows and events this summer, such as Bamboozle, SXSW and Warped Tour. She will also be blogging for Raggedmag.com, the online American Rag Magazine.

Out of all the amazing fashion contrasts there are out there my favorite has to be leather & lace. The edginess of the tough leather paired with the femininity of the romantic lace is such a delicious contradiction it’s a guarantee to make anyone stop and stare.

I started the outfit with a lace skirt as an easy base, then added a long-sleeve button-down collared shirt in a contrasting lace pattern. The two different lace patterns help break up the outfit and prevent it from looking like a dress. I topped off the lace shirt with an edgy asymmetrical leather vest to give the outfit some bite.

I continued the leather & lace theme with an Alexander McQueen inspired clutch and black suede booties that I spiked myself! The lace clutch is one of my favorite accessories (although I wish it was slightly bigger so I could store more things), as it has a bejeweled skull four-finger knuckle clasp- it’s a clutch and a ring! And I’m quite proud of the spiked booties- I bought them cheap at Target and spiked them myself. (I bought the spikes at http://studsandspikes.com). Spiking the shoes was not that easy and it’s quite the arm workout, but I think it was totally worth it!

So get a little femme, get a little butch, and toss on some leather & lace!

Ooh la la!

I was originally just looking for a basic dress to play off my red accessories (to match my red hair) and I ended up feeling very comment voulez-vous dire… French?

While I didn’t necessarily see people walking around Paris dressed like this, the classic black & white striped dress with the vintage red, white, blue & gold neck scarf certainly gave me a stereotypical French look. While I didn’t top it off with an obvious beret or cigarette, I did continue the color theme by adding red suede platform heels and a black & white jewel print clutch. The amazing Erickson Beamon satin clutch also has two amazing crystal tassel zip pulls on the front that mimics the print. I added some over-sized round sunglasses towards the end to protect from the blistering soleil.

I certainly think it gives me a little… je ne sais quoi, wouldn’t you say?

Sometimes inspiration can be found in the strangest places. In my case, the inspiration for this outfit came from a picture of a child I saw on Tumblr. (For the record, I’m not a fan of children, so those that know me would find this even stranger).

With nippier weather, this outfit offers a cosy, casual and warm weekend look that is perfect for running errands as well as curling up in front of the fire. The maxi skirt offers a long line for a flattering look, as well as offering protection from the outside air.

Layering is key when you’re running around, as temps change from location to location. A long sleeve thermal and edgy zip-up vest offer substantial warmth without adding much bulk. Keeping them in the same tonal family is also flattering, and black is a universal color that works on all skin tones.

Topping off the look with a thick knit beanie and gold-tipped cat-eye sunglasses keeps the casual and edgy theme running from head to toe.

While clashing (while not really clashing) patterns are in right now, I decided to mix similar patterns (a more subtle take on what I did here) for an all over dotty outfit.

The best thing to remember when using patterns- the smaller the print, the smaller those areas will look, the larger the print, the larger those areas will look. So with that in mind, I paired a white and navy tiny polka dot print mini skirt with a white and navy large polka dot sweater. The bow belt helped cinch my waist while simultaneously creating a visual line to divide up the spots, thus enhancing my curves instead of turning me into a beach ball.

And, with the classic blue and white coloring, it was all too easy to slip on some red platform heels (previously seen here) that perfectly matched my hair and lips. Just call me Miz America.

Being from New Jersey, it’s not unusual to see women strutting their stuff covered in leopard print. However, you don’t typically witness them in head to toe leopard print…. until now.

Whether it’s my NJ status, or just my feline nature, I cannot lie- I adore leopard print. It’s flattering, adds a level of interest to an otherwise tame outfit, and can be found in every color of the rainbow.

You’ll feel like a sex kitten in leopard print (pun intended), and it’s perfect for both day & night (and even for work). You can easily layer a leopard print button-down under a solid colored sweater, or top off a pencil skirt with a leopard print sweater. Or, if you work in a more trendy office, pair leopard print pants with patent leather black heels, a white button down and black blazer.
